4 Disadvantages Of Online Entrepreneurship And Ways To Change Them

July 9, 2019

by Yours Truly

So you’re thinking you want to start a business online. Whether it’s to create a profitable blog or sell your awesome creations on Etsy, there are some Disadvantages of Online Entrepreneurship so it’s going to require more time and energy than you can imagine to start that puppy up!

Click to share this on Facebook!

When people think of online entrepreneurship they think of you sitting home, dilly-dallying on your computer. They have no concept of what it is you are actually doing on that laptop.

What you really want to tell them is...You’re an online entrepreneur and you are doing a million and one things to build a sustainable online business. Same as if you were to open up a brick and mortar location.

And because you are building it all by your lonesome (most likely), you don’t have the luxury of hiring a team just yet so you are left to figure out HOW to do everything and HOW you’re going to do it all.

Oh, and the next time someone stares at you blankly when you tell them what you do, tell them ”I am in the infant stages of building a business online where I…” (Fill in the blank) and then proceed to recite the many hats from the list below that you wear.

| WHAT DOES A BLOGGER / ONLINE ENTREPRENEUR DO?

  1. Web Designer

  2. Content Creator

  3. Videographer

  4. Editor

  5. Graphic Designer

  6. Researcher

  7. Social Media Strategist

  8. Marketer

  9. Email Writer

  10. Sales Funnel Creator

  11. Landing Page Designer

  12. Sales and Customer Relations

  13. Brand Ambassador and Growth Specialist

  14. Janitor (You clean your office, don't you?)

  15. Administrative Assistant

  16. Online File Organizer

(Just to name a few)

When someone rudely asks “How much do you make doing that?” (They wouldn’t have the gall to ask what your income is if you were to answer with pet sitter or artist) don’t divulge how much you make, in turn, ask them how much they make a year and watch their wheels turn when they realize how rude they are being.

Or, smile and reply “ I’ve never found it classy to brag about my income.” That’ll really stop them in their tracks! Throw in the word “Brag” and they’ll assume you mean to imply that you’re making a decent living. (Hopefully you are, if not, you will be:)

OK, my online business building comrade, not to scare you away from creating your dream life, but I’m about to hit you with 4 Sad but True Disadvantages of Online Entrepreneurship and Ways to Change them.

1. YOUR BLOG RUNS YOUR LIFE

If your customers or clients are calling, texting, or emailing at all hours of the day, expecting you to answer, your online business is ruling your life.

If your family is not respecting your work time at home and they are barging in your home office whenever they feel like it and you are constantly making up for the lost time by working until midnight, your online business (or family, rather) is ruling your life.

Boundaries are important to your well-being and your family, customers, and clients should know upfront that you are not on call 24/7. You are an online entrepreneur, not a first responder. Even first responders get time off!

| 3 INITIAL STEPS TO ESTABLISH BOUNDARIES IN YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS

1.  Set your Business Hours from the start or go and implement them now. Put a lock on your door if you have to.

2.  For client's and customers, set up an Automatic Email Response or set your email to Vacation mode at the end of your day to let any inquiries know that you’ll answer them during normal business hours and what those hours are. You can even add your hours to your Email Signature.

3.  Set up your Voicemail Greeting to properly mention your business hours with a prompt on other ways they can interact with you while you are away from your desk. Your website or Social handles and mention any specials. Keep this greeting updated often.

Be firm, stick to your guns and your family, client's, and customers will be respecting you and your business in no time!

2. YOU FEEL THE EVER-POPULAR ENTREPRENEUR STRESS THAT LEADS TO BURNOUT

Blogging or Online Business stress and burn out comes when you are solely responsible for completing every task. Or when you don’t set those above mentioned boundaries. Or when work infringes on your family time.

The ultimate result is you end up physically sick and/or you want to throw in the towel and quit. Your brain and body need downtime to relax and regroup so you can plan out the next quarter of your marketing and content creation plan which is why a good night’s sleep is so important to physical health.

Constantly thinking about the next steps of your business without a break is like begging for burn out.

Give your brain a break and outsource your social media marketing, graphic design, and/or content creation tasks.

And above all else...leave work at the office, even if it’s your home office. No, if’s, and’s, or butt’s about it.

| 2 HELPFUL WAYS TO KEEP TRACK OF IDEAS SO YOU CAN LEAVE WORK AT WORK

Write yourself notes so you don’t forget anything or add your thoughts to your to-do list so it’s ready and waiting for you upon returning to your regular working hours.

  • iPhone Notes App: Open the notes app on your iPhone and record your thoughts, save web pages that are important and you want to refer back to, and create a checklist or to-do task list so you don't forget all those brilliant ideas you had by the time you go to sit back down at your desk during your regular hours of business.

  • Trello: Have you tried the cloud-based organization and project management online tool, Trello for your online business? With Trello it's as simple as:

    • Create a Board

    • Create a List

    • Create a Card within a list and keep building on your boards to help you create on-boarding systems for you Virtual Assistant, keep track of all your blog navigation, landing pages, freebies, and product URLs for easy copy and paste marketing on social media and email. Heck, you can even create boards that keep track of weekly recipes, grocery shopping lists, family appointments, etc.

3. YOU AREN’T ABLE TO SPEND AS MUCH TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Your friends and family will certainly complain if you fall off the face of the earth because you are busy working, building an online business to create a nice life for yourself but these complaints may one day turn to resentment.

  • A spouse may resent being the sole caregiver while you work all hours of the day or the opposite may occur…

  • Your spouse may resent the fact that you are home all day (not making any money yet) while the cooking and cleaning still needs to be done and they are busy at a job that brings in the income.

  • Your kids may feel you love the business more than them.

  • Your friends may get tired of issuing invitations if they think your business takes top priority.

Without a strong support structure, your efforts to build a legacy may leave you alone in the world.

| A SIMPLE WAY TO ACHIEVE WORK, LIFE, BALANCE

To avoid resentment from your family and friends, this is where you need to be strict with yourself when it comes to your set work hours.

You set boundaries for your family, client's, and customers, well, you also need to respect your work time so that you can maintain a normal schedule that will enable you to balance work with life, keeping everyone satisfied.

4. YOU SPEND MORE TIME ON ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS THAN ON CREATING PRODUCTS FOR YOUR TRIBE TO MAKE MONEY

If your primary purpose of starting a blog or any other online business is to help others, then why are you spending more time on administrative tasks than creating blog posts and products to help your tribe?

Yes, you need to market yourself to obtain new readers but implementing your marketing strategy can certainly be done while you are connecting, creating, writing, researching, coaching, or providing services to your clients.

| A QUICK WIN STRATEGY TO IMPROVE PROFITABILITY WHILE GROWING AND MAINTAINING CONNECTIONS ONLINE

  • Hiring a Marketing Strategist can help you stay focused on your money-making tasks instead of worrying so much about where to find your next client, customer, or growing your audience.

Change isn’t easy, especially when you’re talking about changing things about your established online business. But the right changes can breathe new life into your business.

If you aren’t sure if you are ready to spend the money to outsource, it’s OK to start small.

| #1 STRATEGY FOR OUTSOURCING

  • Start by reaching out in the Facebook Groups you are a member of about wanting help.

  • Create a post with a description of what you are looking for, (start with 1 small assignment to see how well the Virtual assistant can manage the task) and that you are only looking for help 1-2 hours per week to start.

This keeps outsourcing affordable and gets your feet wet with the amazing possibilities that hiring a Virtual Assistant can bring to your online business.
